Isaac Mounsey

Success Story

Thirty-three-year-old Isaac Mounsey of Flagstaff, Arizona, works as a cook at a local restaurant, balancing his passion for food with his love for family, flying drones, and 3D printing. In August, his life changed drastically after a tragic car accident resulted in multiple traumatic injuries and the devastating loss of his wife. Facing a spinal contusion, cervical surgery, and upper body fractures, Isaac was confronted with many challenges.

After his initial hospital stay at an acute care hospital, Isaac was referred to Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Arizona (RHNA) for specialized rehabilitative care. His condition was severe. He had significant limitations in movement, including barely being able to move his hands. Upon admission to RHNA, Isaac’s goals were clear: he wanted to regain independence in daily activities, such as using the bathroom, getting in and out of bed, and ultimately walking again.

Isaac worked with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team who created an individualized treatment plan so he could reach his goals. Isaac’s physical therapists worked with him on regaining strength and mobility, helping him to achieve monumental milestones, including standing and walking independently.

“Isaac lived through an emotionally, mentally, and physically devastating accident,” says Dave, a physical therapy assistant. “He learned methods to work through pain and pushed himself with encouragement from his therapists to eventually walk out of the facility and return home to his family. He overcame obstacles that seemed impossible to him upon his admission.”

In addition to physical therapy, Isaac worked with occupational therapists to acquire practical strategies for relearning daily living skills.

“Working with Isaac was incredibly humbling and rewarding,” says Alex, an occupational therapist. “Throughout our time, we shared laughter, tears, and celebrations. Isaac consistently gave his all during therapy, pushing himself beyond my expectations. I have no doubt that he’ll continue to improve at home. I feel blessed to have had the privilege of treating him.”

Isaac’s persistence, hard work, and determination paid off. After 43 days at RHNA, he was discharged and returned home.

“I’m happy to be reconnecting with my family and two young children,” he says.
